Grounding Basics
5 questionsWhat is grounding?
Grounding, also known as Earthing, means creating a conductive connection between your body and the Earth. Outdoors, that can be as simple as walking barefoot on grass, soil, sand, or other naturally conductive surfaces.
GroundingRest is designed as an indoor “barefoot substitute.” Its conductive silver fibers connect to the grounding port of a properly grounded wall outlet through the included grounding cord, allowing your skin to maintain an earth connection while you rest or sleep.
What is the difference between grounding & earthing?
The terms grounding and earthing are commonly used interchangeably in the wellness context. Both describe reconnecting the body with the Earth's electrical potential.
Some people use “earthing” for direct contact with the Earth, such as walking barefoot outdoors, and “grounding” for using a conductive indoor product.
For everyday use, they refer to the same basic idea.
What is the technology behind grounding products?
The technology is simple: a grounding product contains conductive material and connects only to the grounding port of a properly grounded outlet.
GroundingRest uses soft organic cotton fabric woven with conductive silver fibers.
When the sheet is connected with the grounding cord and your skin touches the conductive surface, the sheet provides a conductive path to ground.
It does not plug into the live electrical contacts of the outlet.
How does earthing affect dogs, cats & other indoor animals?
Pets naturally spend more time in direct contact with the ground when outdoors, and many indoor pets also enjoy lying on grounding sheets and mats.
Research specifically studying grounding products in household pets is limited, so GroundingRest should be treated as a comfort and wellness product rather than a veterinary treatment.
If your pet has a medical condition, follow your veterinarian's advice.
Can grounding help with neuropathy?
There is not enough clinical evidence to conclude that grounding can treat neuropathy.
Neuropathy can have many causes, including diabetes, nerve injury, vitamin deficiencies, medications, and other medical conditions.
Some people use grounding as part of a general relaxation or wellness routine, but it should not replace diagnosis or treatment from a healthcare professional.
If you have numbness, burning, weakness, or persistent nerve pain, speak with your doctor.
General Product Questions
8 questionsHow do I test my GroundingRest sheet or mat?
The easiest way to verify your setup is to confirm that the wall outlet is properly grounded and that the grounding cord is securely connected.
If you want to test conductivity more precisely, you can use a multimeter or body-voltage meter.
When correctly connected to ground, body voltage typically drops when you make contact with the conductive surface.
Always follow the meter manufacturer's instructions.
Do grounding products emit EMFs or magnetic fields?
GroundingRest products are passive and do not generate Wi-Fi, radiofrequency signals, or magnetic fields.
They do not use the live electrical contacts of the outlet; the cord connects to the grounding path only.
As with any electrical setup, use the product only with a properly grounded outlet and inspect the cord for damage before use.
Why can't I detect continuity in the grounding cord?
Some grounding cords include a built-in safety resistor.
Because continuity mode on many multimeters only beeps below a relatively low resistance threshold, a safety-resistor cord may appear “open” even when it is functioning normally.
If your meter supports resistance measurement, use that mode instead and compare the reading with the specifications supplied with your cord.
Will it work if I live in an apartment?
Yes.
The floor you live on does not determine whether grounding works. What matters is whether the outlet you use has a properly connected earth/ground terminal.
If you are unsure, use an outlet tester or ask a qualified electrician to check the outlet.
What if my home doesn't have a grounding outlet?
Do not connect GroundingRest to an ungrounded outlet and do not improvise an electrical connection.
If your home does not have a verified earth connection, ask a qualified electrician about your options.
A properly installed grounding rod can be an alternative in some situations, but installation should follow local electrical rules and safety requirements.
Will grounding products interfere with my pacemaker or metal implants?
GroundingRest is a passive product that connects to earth ground rather than live electrical current.
However, if you have a pacemaker, implanted electronic device, metal implant, or take medication that affects clotting, discuss use with your doctor or device manufacturer before starting.
Medical-device compatibility should be confirmed for your individual situation rather than assumed.
What plug type should I select?
Select the plug option that matches the grounded outlet standard used in your country:
- United States & Canada: USA plug
- United Kingdom: UK plug
- Most EU countries: EU plug
- Australia & New Zealand: AU/NZ plug
The important part is that the outlet has a functioning earth/ground connection.
What is better: a grounding mat or grounding sheet?
Both use the same basic principle; the better choice depends on how you want to use it.
A grounding sheet is ideal for long, comfortable contact while sleeping.
A grounding mat is more versatile for a desk, sofa, floor, or shorter sessions.
For overnight use, most customers prefer the GroundingRest sheet.
GroundingRest Sheet Questions
7 questionsHow do I know if my grounding sheet is working?
Check three things: the cord is firmly attached to the sheet, the plug is inserted into the grounding port correctly, and the outlet itself is properly grounded.
For a more objective check, you can use an outlet tester and a multimeter or body-voltage meter.
How do I set up a grounding sheet?
Place GroundingRest across your mattress where your body will naturally make contact with it.
Connect the grounding cord to the sheet's snap connector, then connect the other end to the grounding port of a verified grounded wall outlet.
For best conductivity, keep some bare skin in direct contact with the sheet while sleeping.
Which side of the grounding sheet goes up?
The conductive surface should face upward toward your body.
If your GroundingRest sheet has a clearly finished sleeping side or labeled connector side, follow the orientation shown in the included setup guide.
Why does my grounding sheet shock me?
A correctly installed grounding sheet should not deliver an electric shock because it does not connect to the live contacts of the outlet.
If you feel a repeated electrical sensation, stop using the product and verify the outlet with an outlet tester or qualified electrician before reconnecting it.
A brief static discharge can occur in dry environments, but recurring shocks should be investigated.
How much silver should a grounding sheet have?
The percentage of silver is only one part of conductivity.
What matters is how evenly the conductive fibers are woven through the contact area, the quality of the connection, and whether the sheet maintains conductivity after normal use and washing.
GroundingRest combines breathable organic cotton with conductive silver fibers so the sheet remains comfortable enough for everyday sleep while providing a conductive surface.
How long should you lie on a grounding sheet?
There is no universal required session length.
GroundingRest is designed for overnight use, so many customers simply sleep on it as part of their normal routine.
If you are new to grounding, you can also begin with shorter periods and increase use based on comfort and preference.
How long does it take to feel the effects of a grounding sheet?
Experiences vary.
Some people report noticing relaxation or changes in sleep relatively quickly, while others notice little or no immediate difference.
GroundingRest is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease, so avoid judging the product solely by whether you feel a dramatic sensation on the first night.
GroundingRest Mat Questions
10 questionsHow do I clean and care for a GroundingRest mat?
Wipe the surface with a soft damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap if needed.
Avoid bleach, harsh solvents, abrasive cleaners, oils, and prolonged soaking.
Allow the mat to air-dry fully before reconnecting the grounding cord.
How long will a GroundingRest mat last?
Lifespan depends on use, storage, cleaning, and the condition of the conductive surface.
Keeping the mat clean, dry, and away from sharp objects or strong chemicals will help extend its life.
Can I wear socks on the grounding mat?
Direct bare-skin contact is the most reliable option.
Thin natural-fiber socks may still allow some conductivity when moisture is present, but dry fabric can reduce contact significantly.
For the most consistent grounding connection, place bare feet, hands, legs, or another area of skin directly on the mat.
How do I know if my grounding mat is working?
Make sure the mat is connected securely to a verified grounded outlet and that the conductive surface is clean and undamaged.
An outlet tester can verify the wall ground, while a multimeter or body-voltage meter can be used for a more detailed check.
Can you sleep on a grounding mat?
Yes, a grounding mat can be used on a bed if it is positioned securely and used according to its instructions.
For all-night comfort and a larger contact area, a grounding sheet is usually the better option.
Can you put a sheet over a grounding mat?
Direct skin contact provides the most reliable conductivity.
A thin natural-fiber layer may sometimes conduct when moisture is present, but thicker or synthetic bedding can reduce the connection.
If you want to cover the mat, test your setup rather than assuming conductivity through the fabric.
Can you plug a grounding mat into a power strip?
We recommend connecting the grounding cord directly to a verified grounded wall outlet unless the power strip manufacturer specifically confirms that the grounding path is continuous and properly wired.
Never assume a power strip is grounded simply because it accepts a three-pin plug.
How long should you stand on a grounding mat?
There is no scientifically established minimum session length.
You can use the mat while working, reading, relaxing, or standing at a desk for as long as it remains comfortable.
How long should you use a grounding mat each day?
Use can range from shorter daily sessions to several hours.
Consistency and comfort are more practical considerations than following a strict time target.
What side of the grounding mat goes up?
The conductive surface should face upward, with your skin contacting that surface.
Keep the connector and cord positioned so they are not pulled, bent sharply, or placed where they can become a trip hazard.
GroundingRest Bedsheet Questions
7 questionsCan I put a regular sheet over the grounding sheet?
For the strongest and most predictable connection, we recommend direct skin contact with GroundingRest.
A very thin natural-fiber sheet may still conduct under some conditions, especially with normal body moisture, but it can reduce conductivity.
If you prefer an extra layer, test the setup rather than assuming it works the same as direct contact.
Can I wear pajamas while sleeping on the grounding sheet?
Yes.
You do not need to sleep without clothing.
Simply keep at least part of your bare skin—such as your feet, calves, hands, or arms—in direct contact with the GroundingRest sheet.
How do I wash my grounding sheet?
Proper washing helps protect the conductive silver fibers.
- Wash when needed to remove body oils and residue.
- Use cold or cool water.
- Use a mild, oil-free detergent.
- Choose a gentle cycle or hand wash.
- Air-dry whenever possible.
- Bleach and whitening agents.
- Fabric softener and dryer sheets.
- Detergents containing oils.
- High heat.
- Ironing directly over conductive fibers.
Allow lotions and body oils to absorb before lying on the sheet, because heavy residue can interfere with conductivity over time.
How long will these sheets last?
With proper care, GroundingRest is designed for regular long-term use.
As with any conductive textile, lifespan depends on washing habits, friction, detergents, body oils, and how often the sheet is used.
Following the care instructions will help preserve both the fabric and its conductive fibers.
What are your grounding sheets made of?
GroundingRest is made from breathable organic cotton woven with conductive silver fibers.
The cotton keeps the sleeping surface soft and comfortable, while the silver creates the conductive network needed to connect the sheet to earth ground.
Can I use grounding products during winter?
Yes.
Indoor grounding products are especially convenient during colder months when spending time barefoot outdoors is less practical.
What's the difference between the GroundingRest Bedsheet and a full fitted grounding sheet?
The GroundingRest Bedsheet is designed to lie across the bed where your body naturally makes contact with it.
This uses less material than a full fitted conductive sheet, makes setup simpler, and makes the sheet easier to wash, store, and travel with.
A full fitted grounding sheet covers the entire mattress.
Both approaches rely on the same principle: a conductive sleeping surface connected to a proper earth ground.
